What Is 4D?
4D stands for four digits. It is Malaysia's most popular legal lottery game where players pick a 4-digit number between 0000 and 9999. If your number matches any of the 23 numbers drawn on that night, you win a cash prize.
The game has been part of Malaysian life since Magnum launched the country's first legal 4D lottery back in 1969. Today there are six government-licensed operators running regular draws across Malaysia, with Grand Dragon Lotto adding a daily draw option from Cambodia. Between all of them, Malaysian players have hundreds of draw opportunities throughout the year.
The beauty of 4D is that it is genuinely simple to understand. You pick a number, choose how much to bet, and wait for the result at 7 PM. There is no complicated strategy involved at the basic level, which is why it has stayed so popular across generations.
Who can play? You need to be at least 18 years old in West Malaysia. In Sabah, the minimum age is 21 for Sabah 88 and STC. Only non-Muslim individuals are eligible to purchase tickets at licensed outlets.
How 4D Works
Every 4D draw produces exactly 23 winning numbers spread across five prize categories. Your number wins if it exactly matches any one of those 23 numbers in the correct digit order. The prize amount depends on which category your number falls into.
Here is the full prize breakdown for a RM1 bet, which is the standard reference used across all operators in West Malaysia:
| Prize Category | Numbers Drawn | Big Forecast (RM1) | Small Forecast (RM1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Prize | 1 number | RM 2,500 | RM 3,500 |
| 2nd Prize | 1 number | RM 1,000 | RM 2,000 |
| 3rd Prize | 1 number | RM 500 | RM 1,000 |
| Special Prize | 10 numbers | RM 180 | Not eligible |
| Consolation Prize | 10 numbers | RM 60 | Not eligible |
Draws take place every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 PM MYT for all major Malaysian operators. On top of that, selected Tuesdays throughout the year are approved by the Ministry of Finance as Special Draw nights, giving players an extra chance to win.
Good to know: Your number must match a winning number in the exact digit order. If the 1st Prize drawn is 1234, you only win if you bet exactly 1234. Betting 4321 will not count unless you play iBox, which is covered further down in this guide. You can check all upcoming Special Draw dates on the Special Draw schedule page.
How to Buy a 4D Ticket
Walking into an outlet and placing your first bet takes less than two minutes once you know what to say. Here is the full process from start to finish:
Find an authorised outlet
Look for official signage from Magnum, Sports Toto, Damacai, Sabah 88, Cash Sweep or STC. Never buy from unlicensed agents because your ticket will not be valid and you will not be able to claim any prize.
Choose your operator
You can bet on multiple operators in one outlet visit. Each operator runs their own independent draw, so the same number can win across different operators on the same night. Many players bet on all three West Malaysia operators at once.
Choose your number
Pick any 4-digit number from 0000 to 9999. You can go with personal numbers like birthdays, dream-inspired numbers, or ask for a quick pick where the machine generates a random number for you.
Choose Big, Small or both
Big Forecast covers all 23 winning numbers. Small Forecast covers the top 3 prizes only but pays more when you win. You can place both on the same number at the same time for a minimum of RM1 each.
State your bet amount
The minimum is RM1 per number per forecast type. If you bet RM2, your prize is doubled. You can also specify which draw date you want to bet on if you prefer to bet in advance.
Pay and collect your ticket
Pay the cashier and collect your printed ticket. Always check the details before walking away. Verify that your number, forecast type, draw date and bet amount are all printed correctly.
Sign the back of your ticket straight away
4D tickets work like cash. Whoever presents the ticket can claim the prize, so sign your name on the back the moment you receive it. Take a photo of the front as a backup reference too. Then keep it somewhere safe until results are announced.
⚠️ Very important: If your ticket is lost, stolen or too damaged to read, the prize cannot be claimed. There are no exceptions and no way around this rule. Sign the back of your ticket immediately every single time.
Big vs Small Forecast Explained
This is the most important decision you will make every time you buy a 4D ticket. Big and Small refer to which prize categories you are eligible to win. They do not affect your bet amount directly.
Covers all 23 winning numbers
Your number qualifies for a prize if it matches any of the 23 drawn numbers across all five prize tiers.
Covers the top 3 prizes only
Your number only qualifies if it matches the 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize. Higher payout but fewer chances to win.
So which should you choose? Big gives you 23 chances to win per draw compared to just 3 with Small. Most beginners start with Big because the higher frequency of winning feels better while learning the game. Small makes more sense when you have strong confidence in a specific number and want a bigger payout if it hits one of the top three positions.
You can also bet both on the same number at the same time. Placing RM1 Big and RM1 Small together costs RM2 total. If your number hits 1st Prize, you collect RM2,500 from the Big bet plus RM3,500 from the Small bet for a total of RM6,000 on a RM2 spend. This is how many experienced players play their strongest numbers.
Simple rule: Big gives you more chances to win at lower prizes. Small gives you fewer chances at higher prizes. Betting both covers everything and maximises your return if you hit the top three.
iBox and Permutation Explained
iBox (also called Permutation or Kotak) is one of the most popular bet types in Malaysia. Instead of betting on one exact number arrangement, iBox covers every possible way your four chosen digits can be arranged. So if you bet iBox on 1234, you win if any arrangement of 1, 2, 3 and 4 is drawn as a winning number.
The cost of an iBox bet scales with how many permutations your number has. Numbers with all different digits produce the most permutations. Numbers with repeated digits produce fewer, which means they cost less and pay more per win.
Because the prize is divided by the number of permutations, a RM24 iBox bet on 1234 that hits 1st Prize Big pays RM2,500 divided by 24, which comes to about RM104
How to Pick Your 4D Number
Here is something worth saying upfront: every 4D number from 0000 to 9999 has an equal mathematical probability of winning. There is no number that is statistically more likely to be drawn than any other. Each draw is completely independent of the draws before it.
That said, picking a number is part of the fun of 4D, and Malaysians have developed a rich culture around number selection over the decades. Here are the most common approaches:
- Personal numbers. Birthdays, anniversaries, IC numbers, vehicle plate numbers. This is how most casual players choose their numbers and there is nothing wrong with it. If your car plate is 1188, bet 1188.
- Dream numbers. One of the most uniquely Malaysian traditions in 4D. Players interpret dreams, events and symbols as numbers using reference guides. Our 4D Dictionary covers thousands of entries including Guan Yin Ma and Tua Pek Kong guides used widely in the Chinese-Malaysian community.
- Hot numbers. Numbers that have appeared most frequently in recent draws. Some players believe these are on a roll. Our 4D Prediction tool shows frequency analysis across all operators and time periods.
- Cold numbers. Numbers that have not appeared in a long time. The logic is that they are overdue, though statistically each draw is always fresh and independent of history.
- Quick pick. Ask the cashier for a random computer-generated number. No thinking required. Many big wins in Malaysia have come from quick pick tickets.
Whichever method you use, enjoy the process of picking your number. That part is genuinely fun.

For most beginners in West Malaysia, starting with Magnum, Sports Toto or Damacai is the most straightforward path. They share the same draw nights, have the most outlets and follow the standard prize structure. East Malaysia players should look at Sabah 88 or Cash Sweep depending on whether they are in Sabah or Sarawak.
You can also bet on multiple operators at once in a single outlet visit. This is very common among regular players who want their number covered across all three West Malaysia operators on the same draw night.
How to Check 4D Results
Results for all Malaysian operators come out at 7:00 PM MYT every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Special Draw Tuesday. GD Lotto releases results at 7:10 PM MYT every day. Singapore Pools releases at 6:30 PM SGT on the same draw nights as Malaysia.
Here is how a typical 4D result looks and which bets win what:
The quickest way to check all operators at once is right here on our site. Results for every operator appear on the homepage as soon as they are released. You can also check at your nearest outlet or on each operator's official website. Most outlets post the results on a display screen within minutes of the draw closing.
Tip: Bookmark 4d.today on your phone so you can check all operators the moment results drop at 7 PM. No need to visit multiple sites or wait for outlets to post.
How to Claim Your 4D Prize
Congratulations if you have a winning ticket. Here is what you need to do before heading to collect:
Verify your win on the result page
Compare your number against the full result list for the correct draw date and operator. Make note of which prize tier you won and how much that is worth based on your bet amount and forecast type.
Small prizes can be claimed at any authorised outlet
Prizes below the outlet threshold (varies by operator but typically around RM1,000) can be paid out at any authorised outlet of the winning operator. Bring your original signed ticket and your Malaysian IC.
Larger prizes must be claimed at the operator's office
Prizes above the outlet threshold need to be processed at the operator's official prize redemption centre. Bring your original signed ticket, a valid IC and expect a short waiting period for verification. Very large prizes may take a few working days to process.
You have 180 days from the draw date to claim
All 4D prizes must be claimed within 180 days (6 months) of the draw date. After that window closes, unclaimed prizes are forfeited and go to the Ministry of Finance. Always check the draw date printed on your ticket before storing it away.
⚠️ Remember: 4D tickets are bearer instruments. Always sign the back of your ticket the moment you receive it. Without your signature, anyone who gets hold of your ticket can walk in and claim your prize.
Responsible Play
4D is a game of chance and it is important to approach it that way. Every single draw is completely independent of all previous draws. No number is overdue, no pattern guarantees a win, and no system can reliably predict the outcome. Understanding this is the foundation of enjoying 4D in a healthy way.
A few things worth keeping in mind before you start:
- The probability of your number matching 1st Prize in any given draw is 1 in 10,000
- The probability of winning any prize at all with a Big Forecast bet is 23 in 10,000, which is about 0.23%
- Over the long run, the operator retains a margin on all bets. 4D is not a reliable way to make money
Here is how to keep it enjoyable:
- Set a fixed weekly or monthly budget before you start and stick to it no matter what
- Treat 4D as entertainment spending, the same way you would a movie ticket or a meal out
- Never chase losses by betting more after a losing run
- Never borrow money to fund your 4D bets
- If betting starts affecting your finances, relationships or mental wellbeing, please seek support
